I thought it would be fun to grow a sunflower hedge – if you can call nightly battles against slugs, and sometimes the wind, ‘fun’. Not to mention the fact that we had to build a fence too, in case the old one fell in on my garden.
The old one isn’t mine, and replacing it wasn’t an option, so we built one on our side. I use the term ‘we’ loosely, as my husband built it while I stood around waiting for something to do. But we’re a team.
I started the sunflowers off at the end of April in my (unheated) greenhouse. I planted over 30 seeds, but due to the fence carry-on, I put them out in the garden later than planned.
So… by the end of May/start of June, everything looked like this. I staggered putting them out, as I worried the slugs would have a feast at my expense, and I didn’t want to start over. The idea is to grow a thick six-foot ‘fence’, but we’ll see.
I also planted some in the front, along our driveway.
Now, we just need to wait and see what grows and what the slugs eat.
